Better regional transport investment needed

Monday, September 24, 2012

Meg Munn MP attended a meeting in Westminster to meet Transport Minister Norman Baker to press the economic case for further transport investment and devolution of powers to the Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire region. She is vice-Chair of the recently formed All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire.

At the meeting the Group heard evidence from a wide range of businesses, Local Enterprise Partnerships and councillors from across the region, who shared their experiences of transport issues and possible solutions. The region has seen a historical underinvestment in its transport infrastructure, which was now impeding the prospect of future economic growth.

The Minister was pressed at the meeting to localise transport funding decisions, with Meg and others arguing that local representatives were better placed to decide which options could unlock major investment in construction, renewable energy and manufacturing. Following the meeting the Group will now be developing an ‘Actions for Government’ document providing a number of possible solutions to key transport challenges across the region.

Meg said:

“Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire has greater potential for economic investment than it receives, our region has three international airports and the largest ports complex in the UK. This all-party group will be vital for ensuring that the regions voice is heard in Parliament.”
