New Healthy Living Pharmacy

Thursday, September 27, 2012

Local MP Meg Munn attended the opening of Gleadless Valley Pharmacy and presented owner Neville Lee with a certificate giving it the new status as a Healthy Living Pharmacy (HLP). At the opening Meg was joined by workers from NHS Sheffield to congratulate Gleadless Valley Pharmacy on this new service.

The new status allows pharmacy staff to offer healthcare advice to members of the community covering issues such as alcohol consumption, stopping smoking and weight management. A number of pharmacies in Sheffield are well on their way to becoming Healthy Living Pharmacies, with eight out of 11 pharmacies already accredited with this status. The city is one of just 20 pathfinder sites that successfully bid to test out the HLP model.

A White Paper, Pharmacy in England: Building on strengths, delivering the future, published in April 2008 described the role community pharmacy could play in supporting public health. With a wide variety of locations and long opening hours, patients can see a health care professional without an appointment and at a time and location that is convenient to them.

Meg said:

“Promoting healthy living and wellbeing through local pharmacies is a great initiative providing a brilliant service to the community. I am proud that Sheffield has taken on the Healthy Living Pharmacy model with an increasing number of branches being awarded the status across the city.”
