Expanding engineering opportunities

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Meg Munn MP visited the Global Technology Centre of AESSEAL, one of the major specialists in the design and manufacture of mechanical seals, to discuss opportunities for getting more local young people into careers in engineering. She is particularly interested in working with companies and education providers in the region to help train and employ more female engineers.

During the discussion the company outlined their plan to take on at least 30 apprentices over the next five years. They believe that based on past performance, apprentice numbers and investment in training could grow. Whilst there she was given a tour of the company’s site in Rotherham, and met employees who design, build and sell the seals around the world.

Meg said:

“I really enjoyed my visit to AESSEAL and I’m keen to work with companies based in the region to help more young people benefit from the engineering jobs that are available.

AESSEAL is a modern and very successful company, which exports products around the globe. Their specialist seals are used in cars, ships and in industry. Only a few companies make such specialist products and it’s fantastic that one of these is based right here in our region.”

AESSEAL are the world’s fourth largest company producing mechanical seals to be used in pumps and rotating equipment to prevent liquids and gases from escaping. They employ 650 people in the UK, 300 of which are based at their site in Rotherham, and 1490 overseas. They also run apprenticeship schemes and work with local schools.
