Meg joins global celebration of women

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Sheffield MP and former Women’s Minister, Meg Munn, is joining women from around the world to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day. The annual celebration aims to increase the profile of women working in science, engineering, technology and maths.

People from countries from Brazil to Italy, the US to the UK, are being encouraged to talk about the women scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians whose work they admire. The day is named after Ada Lovelace, who is widely thought of as the first computer programmer. Born in 1815, Ada Lovelace wrote several computer programmes before she died of cancer aged 36.

Meg said:

“I am currently working with business and education leaders in my home city of Sheffield to make our region first choice for women wanting to train and work in science, engineering, technology and maths. Through this I have met women working in these areas who are passionate about these subjects and want to encourage greater female participation. Ada Lovelace Day is a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of women who are working in these professions in the UK and around the world.”

Ada Lovelace Day takes place on 16 October 2012. Events and celebrations are taking place all around the world. For further information visit:
