Launch of the Nuclear Skills Academy

Thursday, October 18, 2012

The National Skills Academy for Nuclear Manufacturing was recently launched at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in South Yorkshire. Meg Munn MP attended along with over 200 key stakeholders, industry representatives, employers and government officials.

The event also saw the launch of the AMRC’s new Training and Apprenticeship centre. This centre will build on the technical expertise available at the AMRC, along with its partners Boeing and Nuclear AMRC, to help train the skilled engineers that manufacturing need to compete in global high-value markets such as aerospace and power generation. The AMRC has plans for up to 250 students, aged from 16 upwards, to be taken on paid apprenticeships with opportunities to progress on to postgraduate courses.

Meg said:

“It is vital that we train young people in the region for the skilled jobs which we know are going to be developed over the next few years. It is encouraging to see a greater focus on manufacturing in the UK, and especially in South Yorkshire where we can build on our traditional strengths in engineering.

I’m also pleased to know that there is recognition of the need to attract young women as well as young men to this area of work. These are exciting developments for our area and I look forward to seeing results over the next few years.”
