Hatred and discrimination doomed to fail

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Whilst on a parliamentary visit to Berlin Meg Munn MP arranged to visit the ‘Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe’, also known as the ‘Holocaust Memorial’, which is dedicated to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. It is located just south of the Brandenburg Gate and very near the Bundestag, the German Parliament building.

The memorial was dedicated on 10th May 2005 as part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of VE Day, and opened to the public two days later. A Holocaust survivor was chosen to speak on behalf of the six million dead and in her speech she noted that although the Holocaust had taken everything she valued, it had also taught her that hatred and discrimination are doomed to fail. She also emphasised that the children of the perpetrators of the Holocaust are not responsible for the actions of their parents.

Some 3.5 million visitors entered the memorial in the first year it was open, and about 490,000 people also visited the underground Information Centre, 40% of them non-Germans. It continues to attract visitors to wander about the over 2700 different sized concrete slabs.

Meg commented:

“I wanted to visit the memorial and show my respect for the millions who were murdered in the Holocaust. It’s only by remembering what has happened can we really appreciate where human kind can be led and understand that we must strive to ensure the situation is not repeated.”
