Cutler’s Company programme to support young people

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Meg Munn MP recently met Master Cutler, Pam Liversidge, to discuss an educational programme organised by the Cutler’s Company in Sheffield to support young people in three local schools.

The Cutlers’ ‘Made in Sheffield’ skills and ambassador programme, is a partnership between work-wise, the city council, local businesses and schools. The education programme gives young people new learning opportunities and work-experience linked to the curriculum, helping them become more ready for the world of work. Freemen of the Cutlers’ Company are involved by going into participating schools to share information and knowledge. The programme also links to existing schemes such as The Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Three Sheffield schools have taken part in the first stage of the pilot scheme, which started a year ago. The programme lasts for 2-years and aims to support young people’s self-esteem and confidence, as well as supporting communication skills, numeracy, creativity and literacy.

Incidentally, Pam Liversidge is a qualified engineer and the first ever female Master Cutler in Sheffield.

Meg said:

“I was really interested to find out about how the Cutlers’ educational programme has been working with schools to support young people. It’s great to learn that the scheme has been widely welcomed and supported by schools and businesses.

I’ll be keeping a look out for how the scheme develops and hope that it will open up career opportunities for girls and boys in areas like manufacturing and engineering.”
