Gripping the issue

Monday, October 29, 2012

Meg Munn MP recently visited Sheffield-based manufacturing company Gripple, and its sister company Loadhog, to discuss how business and education leaders in South Yorkshire might work together further to train and support more female engineers.

Meg was given a tour of the company’s manufacturing sites by founder and Chair, Hugh Facey, who explained how the idea for the ‘Gripple’ came about which was to provide a solution for farmers who wanted an alternative to joining fence wires by bending and knotting. Gripples have now been used around the world, with over 40 million Gripples sold in Australia alone, and the company now has offices in France and the United States.

As an employee-owned business, everyone at Gripple and Loadhog is a shareholder. The company wants to ensure the principals on which Gripple was founded will be maintained by future generations of employees down the line, and will thus continue for many years to come.

Meg said:

“I was really impressed with Gripple and their sister company Loadhog. The company’s philosophy around innovation and employee-ownership seems to be working well for them. I hope to work with Gripple and other South Yorkshire based companies to make our region first choice for women and girls who want to study and work in engineering.”
