Current crisis in Gaza

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

The immediate priority must be an immediate end to the violence to avoid a spiral downwards that can only mean even greater suffering. Today in the House of Commons I spoke about the impact this conflict is having on the children of both Israel and Palestine. I asked the Foreign Secretary to reaffirm the UKs commitment to support negotiations that would lead to a ceasefire.

The current scale of human suffering is immense and must be reduced. Already in the first five days of the conflict three Israeli civilians and more than thirty times Palestinians have been killed. A full scale ground invasion by Israel would be a disaster for the people of Gaza, and would not lead to long-term security for the people of Israel. It would raise the death toll, and damage profoundly the hope for peace and security.

People living in both Israel and Gaza deserve to live in peace and security. The recent rocket attacks from Gaza into southern Israel which led to this latest Israeli response deserve our condemnation, but there is no military solution to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict.

I welcome the fact that the Secretary General of the United Nations has travelled to the region because sustained international engagement will be vital in helping to bring this conflict to an end. Egypt has a key role to play in this and I have urged our government to support and encourage this process.

There have been no meaningful negotiations on resolving the Palestinian/Israeli conflict in recent months and years. This inactivity leaves the Palestinians stateless and Israelis continuing to fear rocket attacks. Real security for the citizens of Israel, Gaza and the West Bank will only be achieved through serious political dialogue, aimed at establishing a lasting and just regional peace.

In the end it is only by starting and progressing real negotiations for a two-state solution that will bring the security and peace that the people of the region deserve.
