Listening to young people’s concerns

Monday, November 26, 2012

Meg Munn MP recently met some of the young people and staff at the Sheffield Foyer project. The Foyer movement offer support to young people, including providing safe and secure housing and helping them find work or go into further education. The Sheffield project is one of the national network of 140 Foyers and opened in 1997 with 60 beds. The young people that Meg met had recently been working on citizenship and their meeting was part of this.

Meg said:

“It’s always good to meet young people and staff at Sheffield Foyer. They raised concerns with me over barriers which some of them are facing in getting into work or further education. It’s really important that the government doesn’t create unnecessary problems for young people, who may already be finding it difficult to find a job or go to college, so I’ll be raising their concerns with ministers.”

The Foyer network understand many of the barriers facing young people and try and develop new approaches to help them overcome these. In exchange for services tailored to their needs, young people entering a Foyer are expected to actively engage in their own development and make a positive contribution to their local community.
