Creative answers at Access Space

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Local MP Meg Munn recently visited Access Space, a free internet learning centre in Sheffield. She was taken on a tour of the centre by founder, James Wallbank, who explained that it is the longest running and most sustainable free, open digital arts lab in the UK, with around 2000 people visiting the facility every year.

At Access Space, people interested in art, design, computers, recycling, music, electronics and photography meet like minded people, share and develop skills and undertake tasks together. The project operates at a very low cost with a minimal carbon footprint, using recycled donated computers and open source software.

Earlier this year Access Space was chosen by The Observer & the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) as one of Britain’s 50 New Radicals people who are coming up with creative answers to the big issues of our times. Access Space in Sheffield has inspired similar centres to be set-up around the world, including many hundreds in Brazil.

Meg said:

“It’s fantastic to learn that Access Space has inspired centres around the world. I was particularly impressed with the work being done to support enterprise, resulting in new products being developed and sold world-wide. It has been picked up as a model that could be replicated elsewhere, and I’m pleased to hear Access Space is working with others locally to see if more outreach work or similar centres could be established elsewhere in the region.”

Access Space run activities, workshops, exhibitions and art events, as well as the Refab Space fabrication facility. To find out more: http://access-space.org/doku.php?id=start
