Sheffield MP welcomes Prostate Cancer Awareness Week March 22nd - April 1st 2002

Tuesday, March 26, 2002

At present 20,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and it is estimated that the number of cases will increase 47% by 2021. A British man has a 1 in 13 lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer

Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative Party MP for Sheffield Heeley, who lost her father, former Sheffield Lord Mayor Reg Munn to the disease two months ago, has welcomed the arrival of Prostate Cancer Awareness Week.

"This increase in cases highlights the urgent need to make the public more aware of the symptoms of prostate cancer and for men to seek medical advice if they are at all concerned about their health"

This year The Prostate Cancer Charity Awareness Week is focusing on support for men with prostate cancer and their families and friends. Each day during awareness week a special helpline is available on 0845 300 8383 which is staffed by experienced nurses on weekdays from 10am to 4pm. This service is open to anyone concerned with prostate cancer, whether you are man with prostate cancer, the partner of a man with prostate cancer, or merely someone with a question.

There is a also a chat room available on the internet where concerned people can talk to those with a wide range of experience and knowledge on all aspects of prostate cancer.
