Parliamentarians for Conflict Prevention

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

Recently Meg Munn MP held discussions with staff of the East West Institute on the work of the Parliamentarians Network for Conflict Prevention which it supports. She met Vice President of the East West Institute, Ambassador Beate Meader-Metcalf, and Agnes Venema who is the Programme Co-ordinator for Women Peace and Security.

Meg joined the network two years ago after speaking at an event to support Afghan women MPs in their work in the country. Following her contact with the network she has raised various issues directly with Foreign Office Ministers, including pressing them to ensure that the rights of Afghan women and girls are protected in negotiations about the future of Afghanistan.

Subsequent to the event an exchange of ideas has started between Pakistani women MPs and Afghan women MPs, with visits to each other’s countries. Facing similar challenges the women have shared their experiences and believe that their efforts will lead to greater implementation of policies that support the rights of women in both countries.

The Parliamentarians Network for Conflict Prevention was launched in 2008 and is an international non-partisan group of over 170 parliamentarians from 58 countries. Members work to improve their national parliaments’ conflict prevention work, and to influence conflict prevention at an international level such as in the United Nations.

Meg said:

"I am encouraged that the conference I attended has led to positive outcomes for women MPs in countries that are experiencing conflict and terrorism. I will be working with the network to support these initiatives and others in the future."
