Developing grassroots tennis

Monday, February 11, 2013

David Gregson, the newly appointed Chair of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), called to meet Meg Munn MP to discuss the situation about grassroots tennis. Meg had held a Westminster Hall debate to air concerns about the future funding for tennis and, as current Secretary of the All-Party Parliamentary Tennis Group, was to discuss future possibilities with him.

A survey by Sport England showed that tennis participation has fallen to only 402,000 regular players, and shockingly, that the number of tennis courts has declined from 33,000 to 10,000 in the last 10 years. Meg discussed with David the engagement between the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and sports charity Tennis For Free (TFF), to regenerate unused tennis courts and increase participation. At a recent roundtable discussion chaired by Meg, representatives from both organisations discussed sharing ideas and resources to identify and develop more tennis sites across the country.

Suggested ideas included the LTA communicating their participation statistics more widely, and developing more flexibility in working with small organisations such as TFF. David is the Chairman of a leading UK health and social care charity and he is also a Director of the London Legacy Development Corporation, which is transforming the Olympic Park following the 2012 Games.

Meg said:

“David is very experienced and passionate about his work.  I hope that we can continue to work together with the LTA and other tennis organisations to provide opportunities for people of all ages to get fit and use their local courts”
