Equal care needed for Prostate Cancer patients

Thursday, March 28, 2013

Recently Meg Munn MP met constituent Denton Wilson and campaigner Paul Jordan when they visited Westminster. Denton is a prostate cancer survivor and they both work with Prostate Cancer UK in advocating equal care for prostate cancer patients across the UK.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK and over 40,000 men are diagnosed with the disease each year, with currently 250,000 men are living with the disease. Unfortunately, there a postcode lottery system that determines the varying levels of care that a prostate cancer patient receives.

Prostate Cancer UK has drawn up a checklist of the standards of care a patient should receive in order to combat this issue. The standards address the needs the patient at every step, including diagnosis, treatment and procedures, living with and after prostate cancer, and even end of life.

Meg continues to work with Prostate Cancer UK to ensure that men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer receive quality care, information and support. She was pleased to learn that her efforts have led to information on the disease being more readily available in surgeries in Sheffield.

Meg said:

“It’s horrible to think that the quality of care a person receives could be entirely dependent upon where they live. I will continue to work with Prostate Cancer UK to encourage our local Clinical Commissioning Group to adopt this useful checklist so that patients know what to expect.”
