Meg Munn supports new Adult Learning Grant

Wednesday, November 5, 2003

Thousands of young adults starting college courses in South Yorkshire this autumn could get a new weekly grant to help meet the costs of improving their qualifications as the Government pilots the Adult Learning Grant.

Developed as part of the Government’s Skills Strategy to improve the nation’s skills base, the new Adult Learning Grant offers an allowance of up to £30 per week to young adults on low incomes studying full time for a first full level 2 qualification (5 GCSEs or equivalent), or for young adults studying full time for a first level 3 qualification (2 A-levels or equivalent).

Speaking in support of the new grant Meg Munn said

“A £30 per week allowance could be all the difference between someone going to college or deciding that they cannot afford it. I am delighted that this scheme is being piloted in South Yorkshire so that Sheffield students will get the benefit straight away. I urge everyone who thinks they might be eligible to contact learndirect, and any young adults who are thinking about studying next year too, to consider this when they are making up their minds.”

The last date for entry onto this pilot programme will be after the recruitment / enrolment process in September / October 2004.

The Grant applies to those studying in South Yorkshire Colleges - regardless of whether they live in S. Yorks.

There is no effective cap on the total budget for this programme and so there is no 'first come, first served' imperative. If the applicant qualifies they will receive the Grant.

Application packs include everything needed to apply, plus a Guidance leaflet (and pre-paid return envelope) and are originated through learndirect (0800 100 900), through College Student Support facilities or from a wide range of community groups and Advice and Guidance organisations.
