Guide Dogs High Street Charter and Meg Munn MP

Tuesday, November 18, 2003

Meg Munn has thrown her support behind the Guide Dogs High Street Charter which was launched in Westminster on November 13th.

Retail therapy has become an essential part of many people’s lives but, for guide dog owners, high streets can be daunting and confusing. Although there are many examples of good practice, guide dog owners continue to encounter problems on our high streets. At worst, some are refused entry to pubs and restaurants or encounter problems when finding their way around shops. Even everyday activities such as visiting the bank or building society can be a challenge for people with vision-impairment - but it doesn’t have to be that way.

The High Street Charter is a set of guidelines about the responsibilities of Guide dog owners in making sure their dog behaves and the responsibility of businesses on the High Street to welcome vision-impaired customers and offer any help that they may need.

Welcoming the charter in London Meg said “The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association wants a world in which all people who are blind or partially sighted enjoy the same rights, opportunities and responsibilities as everyone else. Some of the tips in the charter, such as offering to guide the customer around the premises and explain the layout, are useful. Many retail staff are keen to do the right thing, but until now have not always been sure what the right thing was. I hope that all the businesses and shops in Sheffield take the trouble to get themselves a copy of the charter and brush up on how best they can offer a good service.”

Copies of the charter are available from 0118 983 8364
