Designed to Move

Thursday, May 23, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently put on her running shoes to joined Paula Radcliffe, MPs and many others in a 1 mile run around the House of Commons to promote ‘Designed to Move A Physical Activity Action Agenda’.

Designed to Move is set up by Nike and is founded on robust evidence showing that the costs and consequences of physical inactivity threaten society and economic prosperity. This project is aimed at so-called ‘change makers’ people, companies, institutions and governments with the resources to turn the situation around.

It has two priorities:

to create early positive experience for children in physical education, sports and physical play, with special emphasis on childhood before age 10, and

to integrate physical activity into everyday life, challenging signals that enforce the current norms.

Today’s children are dropping out of sport and active play at a young age. A study has shown that between the ages 9 and 15, European children represented a 50% drop in physical activity levels by age 15. The problem is seen across the world with American children of the same age showing a 75% drop, and research in mainland China has found that 92% of children experienced no physical activity outside of school.

Between 1961 and 2005 physical activity levels have dropped by 20% in the UK, with a 35% projected drop by 2030 if we don’t begin to alter this trend.

A study shows that 9% of all premature deaths worldwide are attributed to physical inactivity. It is draining economies, and in the UK, USA, China and India the cost of physical inactivity is estimated to have been more than US$200 billion in 2008.

Meg said:

“It is really important that we get people moving again especially young people. A generation that enjoys positive early experience of sports and physical activity has a chance to break this cycle leading to premature death.”
