Sheffield Armed Forces and Veterans Day

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

On Saturday 23rd June Sheffield held its 6th annual Armed Forces and Veterans Day to honour the commitment and sacrifice of all our armed forces personnel past and present. The event started with a parade past the Town Hall to the Peace Gardens where a formal ceremony took place with speeches and presentations from the Lord Mayor, Councillor Vicki Priestly and Leader of the Council Councillor Julie Dore.

Afterwards there was a range of activities in the Peace Gardens including music and dancing from the era of the Second World War. Members of the Territorial Army were invited to a buffet in the Town Hall and veterans enjoyed pie and peas - very welcome on a less than warm summer’s day.

Meg said:

"This is an important event recognising the bravery of men and women, young and old, who have been ready to defend their country and fight for freedom. It is thanks to their efforts that we live in a peaceful society. It was not only a great honour to meet many veterans but really interesting to hear about their time in the forces. Some of them are now in their 90s and recall their service in the Second World War. One veteran spent 5 years overseas without returning home."
