Tennis in Westminster

Wednesday, July 3, 2013

Meg Munn MP was delighted when the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), with the kind permission of the Speaker of the House of Commons, set up an inflatable tennis court outside the Houses of Parliament. A regular tennis player, and Secretary of the Tennis All-Party Parliamentary Group, she supports new ways to interest more people into taking part in the sport she loves.

Children from four primary schools from the Olympic and Paralympic host boroughs in East London were invited to the event and received tips from the tennis coaches provided by the LTA. A number of MPs who turned up, including Meg and the Speaker, John Bercow, where put through their paces on the tennis court.

The event was part of a programme of activity to promote tennis as a sport for all ages and abilities at a time when many of the public are watching the Wimbledon Championships. It is part of the LTA and Tennis Foundation’s summer drive in which there are over 160 events around the country to encourage people to play tennis.

Meg said:-

“It was really good to see this initiative, as it fits with the work I am undertaking with the Lawn Tennis Association to increase grass roots support for this great sport.  I was pleased to see the children there enjoying themselves, and the number of MPs who came along to play, including the Speaker.”
