Call for noise generators to keep pedestrians safe

Thursday, July 4, 2013

To help keep pedestrians safe Meg Munn MP has called for the introduction of a vital safety feature on new hybrid and electric vehicles– the installation of artificial noise generators on quiet vehicles.

Research shows that some of these quiet vehicles cannot be heard until one second before impact, and in some conditions are more likely to be involved in a collision with a pedestrian than conventional vehicles. The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association recently held an event in Westminster to highlight the charity’s concerns about the safety implications of vehicles that cannot be heard.

Meg said:

“As engines continue to get quieter as technology advances the danger of pedestrians not hearing vehicles approach grows, with increased risk of collision. Having a noise generator fitted as standard seems a smart way of tackling the problem.”

James White, Guide Dogs’ Campaigns Manager, said:

"As the number of quiet vehicles increases on our roads, we need to ensure they are safe. Blind and partially sighted people rely on the sound of an engine to cross a road safely. If you can’t see or hear a car then how do you know it is there?
