Sheffield hospitals doing an excellent job

Friday, August 2, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently met the Chief Executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust, Sir Andrew Cash, along with Chair Tony Pedder for an update on the work of the hospitals and particularly their budget.

Over the last year the hospitals have achieved lower than expected mortality rates and are meeting the requirements for waiting times. Infection rates for MRSA and Cdifficile have been amongst the lowest for the whole of the NHS. However, like many other hospitals, the Trust missed the target of 95% of patients seen within four hours of attending in Accident and Emergency, achieving 93.24%. However the Trust has continued to be rated as one of the NHS top trusts for the 6th year running.

While the hospitals have done well there continue to be significant challenges in the coming year. These include improving treatment for urgent care patients, continuing to keep infection rates low and the need to save around 4-5% of the budget. Over the last eight years the Trust has saved 200 million in efficiency savings and must save a further 25 million.

Meg said:

"The Sheffield hospitals do an excellent job for the people of the city and surrounding area. However they will struggle to maintain this performance as government cuts, masquerading as efficiency savings, reduce their overall budget."
