A new addition to the city

Monday, August 19, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently met Alex Reynolds, Vice-Principal of University Technical College Sheffield, to discuss the future of the new establishment and in particular its role in increasing the number of woman involved in science and engineering.

Alex shares Meg’s commitment to tackle the lack of representation of women in the science and engineering sector. The college at present has a 20% intake of women on engineering courses, a significant increase in comparison to national figures. He sees this as only the beginning and believes that “as the UTC grows so will the number of women enrolling”.

UTC Sheffield is due to open next month and will specialise in academic and technical qualifications for the creative and digital media, and advanced engineering and manufacturing industries to 14-19 year olds. The college will have around 600 students at its state of the art 8.5 million building which is fitted with 1 million of specialist equipment including engineering mini factories, advanced design and sound studios, Arduino and Raspberry Pi workshops and IT environments for creating and testing technology.

Meg said:

“Engineering serves as the backbone of the city and I am pleased to see more young people opting to embark on a career in this area. The UTC represents a great opportunity for young people and the wider community”.
