Meeting ‘Bite the Ballot’ on Democracy Day

Tuesday, October 1, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently attended a meeting organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to mark Democracy Day 2013. The United Nations designated 15th September as Democracy Day to provide an annual opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world. The Inter-Parliamentary Union promoted the International Day of Democracy through its Member Parliaments in 162 countries around the world.

In the UK the event focused on the importance of encouraging young people to be involved and in particular to register to vote. ‘Bite the Ballot’ is an organisation founded by young people to encourage more young people to get on the electoral register.  Since April 2012 they have been inviting young people to register to vote by explaining what the register is and how it affects them. Their target is to register half a million new voters between now to 2015.

Meg said:

“In more established democracies we can be complacent about the importance of having a vote and having a say in how our country and local areas are governed. I am encouraged by the young people from Bite the Ballot who are determined to increase awareness about the importance of democracy.”
