The importance of the Sheffield City Region’s third sector

Thursday, October 17, 2013

Meg Munn MP was delighted to meet David Childs, Chair of the Social Economy Forum (SEF) for Sheffield City Region, and offer her support to promote the Forum and its values.

The Social Economy Forum was launched to showcase the importance of the voluntary, charity and social enterprise sectors within the Sheffield City Region economic area. At the moment the social economy sectors contribute around 3.27 billion to the regional economy, employ more than 65,000 people, engage 400,000 volunteers and provide assistance to 20 million service users each year.

David told Meg that the SEF had gotten off to a good start and is already in discussions with organisations such as the Work Foundation and Co-operativesUK. Meg was impressed to hear about the SEFs ‘Neighbours Can Help’ project, which has been funded by the Nominet Trust. David stressed the challenge now is to spotlight the SEF in order to secure greater funding opportunities for the region.

Meg suggested that the SEF and the Local Enterprise Partnership collaborate in order to achieve this. She hopes to convene an event in November to discuss how the SEF could contribute proposals into the LEPs upcoming growth plan.

Meg said:

“It was good to meet David and hear more about the fantastic work the Social Economy Forum is doing.  The third sector is incredibly important for Sheffield in providing social benefits and making a measurable difference to the local community.

I look forward to working with David in order to make Sheffield one of the leading social economy players nationally and at the European level.”
