Raising awareness of the reality of domestic abuse

Thursday, October 24, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently visited VIDA Sheffield to find out about their range of services. VIDA Sheffield was formerly known as the Sheffield Domestic Abuse Forum.

Maureen Storey, Director, told Meg about the work they do in supporting victims of domestic abuse. She explained that they provide a range of services, including specialist counselling and therapy, support groups, a helpline, advocacy and support.

They also provide a number of training courses to raise awareness of the realities and impacts of domestic abuse. VIDA have secured some funding to develop a parenting programme, but there was real concern that with future contracts going out to competitive tender they simply will not be able to compete.

Meg was also briefed by Heather Hunt from the Gender Respect Education Project. This calls for much more attention to be given to relationship education in schools. Heather explained that over the next three years the Project aims to help children and young people to understand, question and challenge gender inequality and violence in a local-global context.

Meg said:

“VIDA does wonderful work in helping vulnerable people. It is crucial that local, specialist organisations like VIDA are not priced out of securing future contracts. Otherwise there will be a real risk of services being affected.

It was rewarding learning about the Gender Respect Education Project. In order to change attitudes towards women it is crucial that we engage with children at a young age. I will be following the progress of the Project closely, and look forward to seeing some of the resource material which they will be producing.”
