Parliament Week: Women in Democracy 15 to 21 November

Monday, November 4, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently attended an event to highlight the forthcoming Parliament Week, taking place from the 15th to the 21st November. The week aims to give people an opportunity to learn more about Parliament and democratic life. The House of Commons and House of Lords work with over 200 groups such as charities, museums, youth groups and local government to spread awareness of how democracy works.

This year there will be a particular focus on ‘Women in Democracy’. Some events will highlight the role that particular women have played through poems, drama and exhibitions. Speaking at the event the Lord Speaker, Rt Hon Baroness D’Souza, noted that in our Parliament currently only 22% of MPs are female, with a similar percentage in the Lords. The Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon John Bercow MP, referred to recommendations by a special commission before 2010 for political parties to take to increase the representation of women.

Meg commented:

"I welcome this year’s focus on women in democracy. 95 years after women got the vote it is disappointing that fewer than 1 in 4 of all MPs are female. It is important to recognise that this figure was only reached through the determination of some in political parties to improve the representation of women. Parliament week is a good way to encourage discussion about our democracy and its institutions on this and other issues."
