UK Breast Cancer Coalition

Thursday, November 20, 2003

UK Breast Cancer Coalition Board Director, Sheila Smith from Woodseats, Sheffield, has travelled to Westminster to lobby her MP, Meg Munn.

Meg and Sheila (pictured) discussed various national breast cancer campaigns, concerning treatment and cures, but particularly focussed on primary prevention of breast cancer.

Speaking in Westminster, Sheila said “Taking action early to prevent cancer may appear costly but it is an investment that the government cannot afford not to make in the long term. The government set a target to reduce cancer deaths by a fifth among people under 75 by 2010. Achieving it will require improvements in cancer treatment and also a change in our approach to preventing cancer and promoting good health. An effective cancer prevention strategy requires action at individual, community and national level.”

Meg explained that she would be talking to the Department of Health and to the local Primary Care Trusts, to find out how much money they have to prevent cancer, how it is being spent and what programmes are already in place in Sheffield.

“Once we have a clear picture of how Sheffield health professionals are working to prevent cancer then we can see what still needs to be done and start pressing for bigger and better funding.”
