Innovative physics winning solutions

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently attended the Institute of Physics Innovation Awards 2013 in Westminster. The awards celebrate companies that make the most of physics, recognising those who have built success on the innovative application of the science.

Physics is enormously important for the UK economy, with physics based businesses employing more than one million people - 4% of the total workforce. They contribute 77 billion directly, and up to 220 billion when indirect effects such as the supply chain are taken into account.

The five winning companies produced significant innovations with an impact in diverse areas from medical treatments to renewable energy, oil and gas processing, advanced materials and biophysics.

One of the companies, Coherent Scotland Ltd, had developed a range of table-top ultra-fast tuneable lasers which underpinned advances in the biological and medical research sectors. For example, the lasers can be used for brain imaging in people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Meg was very interested to hear that 70% of recent recruits to the company were women, an issue she has long campaigned on.

Meg said:

"It was great to see these companies getting recognition for their innovation. Britain has a strong reputation for research and development and we must support our companies to ensure this important sector of our economy goes from strength to strength. "
