Baha’i persecution in Iran

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently met Daniel Wheatley and Rosanna Smith of the Office of Public Affairs of the Baha’i Community of the UK to discuss their concerns about the persecution of Baha’i in Iran. There are believed to be over 300,000 people of the Baha’i faith in the country, where it originated in the mid 19th century.

The Baha’is have experienced persecution in Iran for many years but it intensified after the Iranian revolution. This has included attacks on property, desecration of cemeteries, imprisonment, as well as on occasion, physical attacks. Most recently there have been reports of the murder of a well known Iranian Baha’i, Mr. Ataollah Rezvani, in August.

Over a hundred Baha’i are currently in prison and many are denied access to higher education. Daniel and Rosanna presented Meg with a copy of a report about acts of aggression in Iran against the community produced earlier this year.

Meg said:

"The Baha’i community in the UK work diligently to raise awareness of the persecution of people of their faith. Freedom of religion is a fundamental human right and it is important that the UK stands up for this. I will be pressing the Foreign Office to raise these concerns in their meetings with Iranian ministers."
