Erbil Remembrance Service

Tuesday, December 3, 2013

During a recent visit to Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq Meg Munn MP attended a remembrance service hosted by the British Consulate in the city. The service was introduced by Brigadier Paul Baker, the British Defence Attaché to Iraq.

There were readings from other members of the consulate staff as well as by the Consul General of the USA, and the head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq. Wreaths were placed next to a Union Jack. Representatives of the Kurdistan Regional Government were present to pay their respects.

The service included two minutes silence at 11am which Brigadier Baker later explained was first proposed by an Australian journalist, Edward George Honey, and taken up by King George V who issued a proclamation in 1919 for the first two minute silence that year on 11th November.

Meg was in Erbil with a delegation from the Kurdish Region of Iraq All-Party Parliamentary Group which she co-Chairs.

Meg said:

"It was a privilege to be at the service in Erbil, I had attended the Remembrance Service in Sheffield, an occasion that seems to draw more people year on year."
