Meeting the University Technical College’s first female engineers

Thursday, December 5, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently visited Sheffield’s brand new University Technical College (UTC) to tour the new facilities, and meet staff and students.

UTC Sheffield opened this September, and students will complete GCSEs and A Levels as well as technical courses in two specialisms that reflect areas of regional business growth. These are advanced engineering and manufacturing, and the creative and digital media industries sectors. Currently, 14% of students at UTC Sheffield are girls.

More than 40 employers from both the advanced engineering and manufacturing, and the creative and digital media industries sectors, are backing UTC Sheffield in a range of ways. This includes providing sponsorship and work placements, and shaping the curriculum and its content by setting industry based projects.

As Patron of the Women’s Engineering Society, Meg was particularly delighted to meet young engineers Sarah, Fran and Praise, as well as creative and digital media student Lauren. Sarah showed the local MP how to operate a robot and really impressed Meg with her skills given she has only been at the UTC a matter of months.

Meg said:

"The UTC Sheffield has made a fantastic start in beginning to address the skills shortages across our region.

I really enjoyed meeting students Sarah, Fran, Praise and Lauren and hearing about how well they have settled in at the UTC. After seeing the excellent facilities, I have no doubt that they are in the perfect place to develop their skills and prepare for successful careers in the engineering and technology sectors."
