Morocco and UK: share many common values

Monday, December 9, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently attended a meeting of the Morocco All-Party Parliamentary Group which was addressed by Salah Eddine Mezouar, the new Foreign Minister of Morocco. Also there was the Moroccan Ambassador to the UK, Her Highness Princess Lalla Joumala. The Minister outlined the changes that have occurred over the last two to three years in Morocco - a new constitution allied with a determination to increase the pace of development in the country.

Minister Mezouar responded to a wide range of questions, including about the need for greater stability in the region following concerns expressed about developments in Libya, Mali and Tunisia. He confirmed that Morocco is keen to develop strong relationships with the UK, and wishes to increase trade and he looks forward to welcoming trade missions to the country.

Meg said:

"It was pleasing that the Minister, who has only been in post for just over a month, choose to visit the UK so early after his appointment. He emphasised that the UK and Morocco share many common values.

In response to my question about the development of the parliament he spoke of a desire to increase engagement with the UK parliament and learn from the procedures that we have in place."

This year also marks 800 years since the first diplomatic exchange between England and Morocco and a celebration of the event is planned.
