Recoop education co-operative

Wednesday, December 11, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently met Kim and Elizabeth Andrews who founded Resolute Education Co-operative - Recoop for short. She was contacted by the couple after they heard her speaking in a debate on co-operative schools.

Currently in its early stage of development, the co-operative will provide supply teachers to schools. Recoop is seeking both schools and teachers as members. Schools who become members will be able to source supply teachers from the co-operative.

Kim is an experienced teacher and has been working as a supply teacher for private companies for a number of years. Over the last few years there has been a significant change in the provision of supply teachers, previously many were employed by local authorities but now around 95% are provided by companies. Kim and Elizabeth are concerned that private companies continue to increase their charges while reducing rates paid to teachers. This had led many schools use teaching assistants to cover classes in a teacher’s absence rather than pay high prices for a qualified replacement.

Recoop are currently taking expressions of interest from teachers and schools in two areas of London - Hounslow and Ealing. Once they have sufficient interest they will begin matching teachers with schools. They believe they can provide a better service at fair rates for schools and keep public money in the school system.

Meg said:

"I was surprised to learn how much money is going to private companies for the provision of supply teachers. I am sure that a co-operative will be able to deliver an improved service while paying teachers a decent wage related to their school level. This should be a win win situation for everyone. I wish Kim and Elizabeth well with their venture and expect to see their model spreading across the country."
