Le Tour coming to Yorkshire

Monday, December 16, 2013

Early this year there was great excitement when it was announced that Le Tour de France, the most famous cycling race in the world, will be starting off in Yorkshire in 2014. Known as Le Grand Depart, over the first weekend in July cyclists will race from Leeds through the country lanes of North Yorkshire, and then go from York to Sheffield.

Recently Meg Munn MP attended a presentation by TdFHUB2014 Ltd - the not for profit company that has been set up by UK Sport to co-ordinate the planning, organisation, financing and staging of the event. Chief Executive Nicky Roche and Chair of the Board, Sir Rodney Walker discussed progress so far, and how they will manage the 10 million Exchequer funding provided through UK Sport.

Key areas that the new company will work on are route operations, working with local authorities, safety and security, highways and transport, communications and finance and procurement. The route has now been finalised and each local authority involved has identified their budget.

The current priorities for the company include volunteer recruitment. Building on the success of the Olympic Games volunteers a recruitment process will be launched for ‘Le Tour Makers’. Other work is going on to provide information to local communities who will be affected by road closures.

Meg said:

“It is fantastic that Le Tour is coming to Yorkshire. It will be a great opportunity for people around the world to see the diversity of our county - with its beautiful countryside and thriving cities.

Getting the logistics right to ensure it is an enjoyable and safe event for everyone is not easy.”
