Meeting the women working in the rail industry

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

The Women in Rail group’s Adeline Ginn and Kathryn Eastwood came to Westminster to meet Meg Munn MP to tell her about their work and plans. The organisation was set up in April 2012 to provide networking opportunities and support for all women in the rail industry.

The group wanted to meet Meg to brief her on the history of the group and seek her advice about similar initiatives and her support to improve diversity in the rail industry. Adeline explained that three issues were crucial. The first was creating a platform where women can network with like-minded colleagues and discuss current issues something that took effect very quickly through LinkedIn.

The second issue was helping and guiding women in the industry to be able to progress their careers and realise their potential. To tackle confidence issues the group launched a mentoring scheme which already has 74 mentors and 112 mentees. The average level of seniority of the mentors is ‘really, really high’, with around 50% being male.

The third priority was to ensure that more women join the industry at entry level by raising awareness of the benefits of working in it. This is still work in progress. Meg was pleased to give her support to the group and agreed to be a speaker at a forthcoming event.

Meg said:

“I welcome the creation of this group and wish them every success in promoting the rail as an attractive career option for women. I look forward to working with them and developing strategies to encourage young women to see rail as a real choice for the future.”
