Campaign to end the cold-home crisis grows

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

Meg Munn MP is supporting a national winter-long fuel poverty campaign to end the current ‘cold homes crisis’. It will highlight local energy efficiency and fuel poverty initiatives across England that improve people’s lives, regenerate local areas, and put money back into the local economy.

It will also highlight some of the real ‘faces of fuel poverty’ the men, women and children, young and old, who are living in cold homes. The campaign is run by fuel poverty charity National Energy Action and supported by around 300 organisations, from local authorities, housing associations, health agencies, other voluntary agencies, community groups, energy efficiency installers and manufacturers.

Meg said:

2.4 million households in England including over 4,000 in my constituency are currently living in fuel poverty. Many will be facing difficult choices about which household necessity they will do without this winter.

There is help available and I would urge everyone struggling with their energy bills to contact the Home Heat Helpline on 0800 33 66 99 to see if they are eligible for grants or other assistance to heat their homes.”

Jenny Saunders, Chief Executive of NEA said:

Our charity knows all too well the horrifying reality of the current ‘heat or eat’ debate and we welcome the support of Meg Munn MP to help tackle the problem. Over the winter we will be campaigning to highlight some of the real stories that lie behind the statistics and demonstrate how improving energy efficiency is the only sustainable way to tackle fuel poverty”.
