Celebration at Sheffield’s first same sex marriage

Monday, April 7, 2014

At midnight the 29th March the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act came into force and Sheffield couple Kyle Emerson and Richie Wood were among the very first same sex couples in the country to marry. Meg Munn MP was invited to attend along with fellow Sheffield MP Paul Blomfield and Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. The event took place in Sheffield Town Hall with family and friends enjoying drinks and canapés before the ceremony began on the stroke of midnight.

Kyle and Richie said that it was thanks to political changes over the last few years that they had not experienced discrimination in the way that previous generations of gay people had endured. Initially they had considered forming a Civil Partnership but when they heard the new law would be coming into force they decided to wait until they could marry. The couple, who have been together for seven years, were presented with a copy of the Marriage (Same Sex) Act signed by the three main party leaders

Meg said:

"I was privileged to be at the first Civil Partnership ceremonies in England in 2005, so was delighted to accept Kyle and Richie’s kind invitation to witness one of the first same sex marriages. It was a joyous occasion, with the couple dancing down the aisle after the ceremony! Ending discrimination based on someone’s sexuality is something to be celebrated."
