The new Pam Liversidge engineering building

Thursday, April 24, 2014

Sheffield University’s Faculty of Engineering recently opened their new building, named after Pam Liversidge. A Chartered Mechanical Engineer she is the first female President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Sheffield’s first and only female Master Cutler to date. She spoke at the event and performed the official opening.

Meg Munn MP was very pleased to be invited to the ceremony, especially as she had suggested it be named after a female engineer.

After the opening ceremony guests were able to see some of the work taking place in the building. It houses the Engineering Graduate School, the Insigneo Institute, Sheffield Centre for Robotics, the Centre for Computational Imaging and Simulation Technologies in Biomedicine and Centres for Doctoral Training.

The Faculty of Engineering has seen unprecedented growth over the last five years. There has been a marked increase in research income, making it one of the elite top three for research funding in 2013, alongside Cambridge and Imperial College.

Meg said:

"I have been working for some time with Sheffield University to encourage more women and girls to consider studying engineering. I was struck by the number of buildings at the university named after men so suggested naming one after a female engineer and the Faculty of Engineering readily agreed. The choice of Pam Liversidge is great; a fantastic local role model."
