Comparing how to improve the wellbeing of children

Wednesday, May 7, 2014

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) recently organised a visit to Westminster by a delegation from the Uruguayan parliament. They asked Meg Munn MP to host a meeting, along with fellow UK parliamentarians, to discuss children’s wellbeing. The Uruguayan group was led by Maria Elena Laurnaga MP and included Daniel Bianchi Saloman MP and Dr. Francisco Gallinal from the Senate.

The discussion compared the experience of children in the two countries, from education to financial support through the welfare system. It included the work that is being done to help children who are subject to abuse. Meg outlined the work of the Child Protection All-Party Parliamentary Group which she chairs, and Jim Dobbin MP spoke about the Council of Europe’s campaign called ‘1 in 5’ concerned with the estimated 1 in 5 children who have been sexually abused.

Meg said:

"Uruguay is a much smaller country than the UK and faces its own specific problems, particularly for children living in poverty and in remote rural areas. Nevertheless it was useful to compare how MPs and governments are improving education, and ensuring sufficient funds to support children’s welfare and tackle abuse."
