Excitement building for Le Tour

Monday, June 9, 2014

The world’s largest single sporting event is set to sweep into Sheffield, as Yorkshire stages the Grand Depart of the Tour de France in July.

On Sunday 6th July, Stage 2 of the Yorkshire Grand Depart will come directly through and finish in Sheffield, entering at Midhopestones and taking in High Bradfield, Worrall, Oughtibridge, Grenoside, Hillsborough and the Lower Don Valley before finishing at the Motorpoint Arena.

Meg Munn MP recently joined Cllr Isobel Bowler, Cabinet member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, Simon Green, project sponsor, and Gary Clifton, project lead, to hear more about Sheffield’s plans for Le Tour.

The Council expects at least 250,000 people to descend on the city for a glimpse of the action. For those who would rather avoid the large crowds along the Tour route, there will be a number of ‘spectator hubs’ where people will be able to watch all the action on big screens and enjoy a real festival atmosphere.

Given the scale of the event there will be a number of road closures throughout the day. Isobel explained that the Council are working closely with emergency services and organisations such as care agencies to ensure that vulnerable people will not be cut off; there will be a number of emergency crossing points along the Tour route.

Meg said:

“As the Sheffield stage of the Yorkshire Grand Depart gets ever closer it was great to hear about the exciting plans being put in place for our wonderful city. There is going to be a real festival feel as people from across the country come to cheer on Bradley Wiggins and co. I certainly can’t wait! ”
