New adoptive parents need support

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Meg Munn MP welcomed to Parliament constituents and adoptive parents, Jane and Janet, to meet Children’s Minister Edward Timpson MP. Jane and Janet told the Minister about their experiences of adopting children who had been taken into care following very difficult experiences.

As they live nearby they have been able to support each other, but have both found that there has been insufficient support from social services. They emphasised that it is well known that children who have had difficult experiences in their early life are very likely to have problems growing up, particularly during their teenage years. Consequently they think that adoptive parents need to be told this clearly, and for support and services to be easily available when needed.

Both parents told how they had had to fight to get the help their children and families needed. Janet has undertaken research on this issue and told the Minister that many families do not receive the help they need, and that leads to children returning to care. This can be devastating, both for the child and the adoptive family.

In response the Minister set out the work that the Government is doing both to promote adoption and to provide more support for adoptive families.

Meg said:

“This was a very productive meeting, with the Minister listening attentively to my constituents. He is sympathetic to their concerns as he has had personal experience of adoption, both professionally and in his extended family.

The Government is keen on adoption being an option for more children, but as the experiences of Jane and Janet show, this needs to go hand in hand with more post adoption support. This must be given greater priority.”
