Showing solidarity with the Kurdish people

Thursday, July 10, 2014

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) held their annual parliamentary event recently and Meg Munn MP attended as she is co-Chair of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq All-Party Parliamentary Group. Invitees included many Kurdish people who live in the UK, along with business people and diplomats.

The Kurdistan Region was facing the military offensive from the Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS) who had taken control of parts of Iraq. Thousands of internally displaced people fled to Kurdistan from the violence in Mosul, with a number suffering from wounds suffered in the fighting.

Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the KRG’s High Representative to the UK, explained to the meeting that her country needed help to deal with this new humanitarian, security and political crisis. She also called for assistance with security, intelligence and counter-terrorism ‎measures to help Iraq push out the Al-Qaida inspired group ISIS.

The importance of the peshmerga, the Kurdish army, in protecting the region was highlighted. Many Iraqi army units had fled areas just outside the regional borders and the peshmerga had moved in to protect the local population from   ISIS forces.

Bayan said that the view of President Barzani was that Iraq had now changed and there is no going back. She said:

“We face a political crisis in Iraq. The policies of discrimination, marginalisation and centralisation have failed.

In this terrible crisis, an opportunity has arisen for Iraq’s leaders to set aside sectarian and nationalist differences and to create a new Iraq that is democratic, inclusive and federal.”

Meg said:

“This annual event is normally a celebration of Kurdish customs and an opportunity for the friends of Kurdistan to come together. This year Kurdistan’s friends turned out in huge numbers to show their solidarity with the Kurdish people and their concern for all the people of Iraq.”
