Psychotherapy a flexible and personalised service

Monday, July 14, 2014

Meg Munn MP recently visited a successful service for adults that has been developed in the London Borough of Hackney, she was accompanied by the local MP Meg Hillier. The service was set up by a group of local GPs for people who seek help for physical problems that are the outward manifestation of mental health issues.

Patients make frequent visits to their GPs, hospitals and other health services, yet their problems remain unresolved. They have often been passed from one service to another, but none are able to offer the flexible, personalised and sometimes time consuming support they require. As Meg is a Patron of the Association for Psychodynamic Practice and Counselling in Organisational Settings (APPCIOS) she was particularly interested in finding out about the service.

The service run by the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, which includes a wide range of professionals such psychiatrists, psychotherapists and community workers. They usually meet people in their own GP surgeries, rather than in remote clinics. Each person is offered an appropriate psychological therapy and the team work jointly with GPs and provide training for primary care staff.

Overall about 75% of all patients show improvements in their mental health, wellbeing and functioning as a result of treatment. About 55% are shown as having “recovered”, which moves a patient to below the threshold for further mental health treatment. There are many benefits for the local health services as the demands on GPs are reduced.

Meg said:

“This is clearly an innovative and effective service. Not only are patients helped more effectively with their problems but the cost to the health service is reduced considerably. This is a service that pays for itself and offers new hope to those falling through gaps in existing provision.”
