The relationship between Methodists and MPs

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

Meg Munn MP was invited to attend this year’s Methodist Conference to give her views on the relationship between the church and individual Members of Parliament. She chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Methodists who meet as a fellowship in parliament and is a life-long Methodist.

In her speech she urged Methodists to make contact with their local representatives as most MPs would be interested to learn what a local church was doing to improve the lives of constituents. Churches may also wish to advise MPs their views on particular Government policies, and this is best done by understanding that the best day to catch most MPs is on a Friday when they tend to be in their constituencies.

Speaking alongside Meg was Ruth Gledhill, the former religious correspondent for the Times who now works for Christian Today. She spoke about the church’s relationship with the media. Both speeches were followed by contributions and questions to which both speakers responded.

Meg said:

“I very much enjoyed the opportunity to discuss my life as an MP and how Methodists and MPs can work more effectively together.

Churches play a vital role in many communities and I hope that more will now have contact with their elected representatives on both local and national issues.”
