Tennis in Westminster

Wednesday, July 16, 2014

Recently Westminster was visited by children who came to play tennis and promote the game. The event was part of a programme of schools tennis run by the Tennis Foundation and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). As Secretary of the Tennis All-Party Parliamentary Group in Westminster Meg Munn MP needed little encouragement to join in.

Ten schools from across the country won the chance to play tennis right under Big Ben and make a video talking about, and celebrating, the tennis they play in school. Primary, special, and secondary schools were invited to create a short video showcasing ways in which pupils take part in tennis, not just by playing but in other ways across the curriculum that engages the whole school community.

This event was supported by the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow MP, who was part of the video judging panel and joined in the tennis activities with the children. The competition built on British tennis’ Schools Tennis programme, which aims to increase and improve tennis participation by training teachers to deliver a fun, quality tennis experience and enable young people to continue playing in the community.

Meg commented:

“Tennis is a passion for me and I am always up for a game. It was especially exciting today to see the enthusiasm amongst the kid’s as they played tennis in Westminster. I hope they will continue to play and enjoy the sport the rest of their lives.”
