Open University - even more flexible ways of learning

Wednesday, August 6, 2014

Meg Munn MP recently met Rajay Naik, the Open University’s Director of Government and External Affairs, to hear about recent developments at the institution. Meg had experience of studying with the Open University during the 1990s to gain a Certificate and Diploma in Management Studies.

Rajay told Meg that they have around 200,000 students, making it by far the biggest university in the UK. However, recently there has been a significant drop in the number of part time students due to changes in student funding and the down turn in the economy.

Demand for courses at the university continues to change, with the age of those studying reducing with the average now 29. The biggest growth area is in students aged 24 28 years, and the number of overseas students is also growing rapidly. As a distance learning organisation the university is also developing new ways for students to learn through the internet and apps.

Meg said:

“I chose to study with the Open University because it was flexible around my work commitments, and the learning was applied to my work. It is good to see that the opportunities provided by modern technology are opening up even more flexible ways of learning, alongside new courses that will meet the needs of this and future generations.”
