The dangers of body piercing

Tuesday, August 12, 2014

Meg Munn MP is supporting a brand new Dan Aid teaching resource, designed to help young people understand the health risks and make informed choices about body piercing.

The resource has been developed by Christina Anderson, one of Meg’s constituents, who tragically lost her son, Daniel, to heart failure in 2002. His death followed complications after contracting septicaemia brought about by having a lip pierced. Meg shares Christina’s concerns that for many young people body piercing is still a ‘grey area’.

Christina has already had a lot of interest from schools up and down the country in the teaching resource, and Meg has written to the Secretary of State for Education, and the Secretary of State for Health, to encourage the government to get behind the scheme.

Meg said:

“I first met Christina in 2003 following Daniel’s death and have been campaigning for stricter regulation of body piercing ever since. I was successful in amending the Local Government Act to allow local authorities to regulate body piercing outlets within their jurisdiction.

We now need to push for reform from within the body piercing industry. We need to get piercers to take this issue much more seriously and encourage them to set a high industry standard.”
