Young carers get a well-earned break

Friday, September 26, 2014

Meg Munn MP is proud to be Patron of Sheffield Young Carers, a charity which supports children and young people aged 8-21 who care for someone at home, usually a family member, with a physical or mental illness or disability or a substance misuse problem.

Being a young carer can affect a young person in many ways - they are not able to go out much, or able to access the same opportunities as other young people, they might end up getting in trouble for missing school. Meg has met many young carers and heard from them how much strain caring responsibilities can put on their lives.

Everyone needs a break and Meg was delighted to join a group of Sheffield’s Young Carers at Whirlow Hall Farm for a residential trip to give them some well-earned time off from their caring responsibilities. The carers told Meg how important it is to be able to socialise with and talk to people in a similar position to themselves. They also quizzed the Heeley MP on what she was doing to increase support for young carers.

And what better way to finish the evening off then with a barbeque in the barn!

Meg said:

“This summer over 75 young carers and their families have received a much needed break and I really enjoyed spending some time with a group of them at Whirlow Hall Farm. It’s so easy for young carers to be ignored and feel isolated, but groups like Sheffield Young Carers give them a voice and make them feel valued. I am proud to continue supporting this fantastic organisation.”
