Transforming opportunities for young people

Wednesday, October 8, 2014

Meg Munn MP paid a recent visit to the Sheffield branch of the Foyer Federation, a not-for-profit organisation that helps to transform the circumstances of young people who have faced barriers in their lives.

They provide up to 64 young people, aged 16-25, with mutually agreed, tailor-made programmes which give the young people access to housing, learning, personal development, training and employment opportunities in line with their needs and goals.

Manager Sam Howarth told Meg that since her last visit they have developed their own interactive training programme “Move On” which helps prepare them for living in their own homes. Meg enjoyed having a chat with Adam, a resident at the Foyer and also ‘health champion’ who acts as a representative for the other young people and helps raise their concerns to the Foyer’s management team.

Meg said:

“It is refreshing to see how positive both staff and residents are, in what is such a difficult climate for the charity sector.

I was delighted to hear how the Foyer is helping so many young people have a fresh start in their lives, although it was obvious that this Government’s tough new sanctions regime is making things hard for them.”
